"Giving children a fighting chance in a
modern world.”
Streetlites
Africa was established
after a group of visitors, four of whom now form the trustees, visited
Ghana, a
developing country situated in the west coast of Africa. The visitors
were
overwhelmed by the striking levels of acute poverty amongst the
majority of
peoples in Ghana, but especially in vulnerable groups such as orphans
and
street children. They were malnourished, sleeping on the streets,
without
adequate clothing, lacking basic self esteem and were despised by
society and
the local community. Even amongst this general group there were
children who
were suffering the worst deprivations of the human condition. These
children suffer from the effects of easily preventable
diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis. Most of these children could
however, given the chance, find their way back to school, some could be
given
apprenticeship training in building, carpentry, mechanic and other
vocations. We are giving them that
opportunity.
Upon
our return to the UK we formulated a plan to
collect redundant IT kit and ship it to Africa and now also to India to empower schools and
agencies to
reach out in a meaningful and relevant way to these street children.
There
is a desperate shortage of IT hardware, software
and training in Africa & India, something that the West has in abundance and to
surplus.
Our
slogan is
"Giving children a fighting
chance in a
modern world.”
They
want the opportunity to make good use of
their obvious talents.
We
want to give them the tools to do so!
